Wilfrid Laurier University, Brantford [campus map]
Carnegie Building, 73 George Street [google map]
Brantford, Ontario, Canada
May 12 to 14, 2011

Abstract Submission Deadline: Tuesday, March 1, 2011

The goal of the 2011 Qualitative Analysis Conference is to explore methodological, theoretical and substantive issues in qualitative research.  This year’s conference aims to examine and celebrate the utility of qualitative inquiry while also highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of qualitative research.  Qualitative methodology continues to advance and be employed in new ways, and in disciplines more traditionally accustomed to quantitative analysis.  With the increasing use of qualitative methodology, and its application in new empirical settings and theoretical landscapes, what methodological challenges and advances are being faced by researchers and what gains are being achieved?

To this end, our conference welcomes theoretical, empirical, and methodological papers from both novice and veteran scholars, as they address the following topics:
  • Debating Standards in Qualitative Research
  • The Use of Technology in Qualitative Research
  • Emotionality and Emotional Labour in the Field
  • Reflexivity and Theory in Qualitative Inquiry
  • Ethical Regulations and Ethical Boundaries
  • Team-Based Qualitative Research
If your paper does not fit into these categories, but is related to interpretivist scholarship, or ethnographic, qualitative research in some way, we still very much encourage you to send in an abstract.  With enough submissions on one area, we can develop new themes as appropriate.

Keynote Address: We are pleased to announce that Peter and Patti Adler, recent recipients of the SSSI's George Herbert Mead Award for Lifetime Achievement, will be presenting the keynote address.

Featured Speakers: We are pleased to announce that Adele Clarke, Andrea Doucet, Christine Hine, and Robert Prus will be attending the conference as featured speakers.

Special Issue of Qualitative Sociology Review will be devoted to publishing some of the best papers presented at the conference.  More details to follow.

About John Berger

Let´s meet John Berger's work at the link http://www.johnberger.org.
According to this website, "John Berger is a storyteller, essayist, novelist, screenwriter, dramatist and critic, whose body of work embodies his concern for, in Geoff Dyer's words, "the enduring mystery of great art and the lived experience of the oppressed."
He is one of the most internationally influential writers of the last fifty years, who has explored the relationships between the individual and society, culture and politics and experience and expression in a series of novels, bookworks, essays, plays, films, photographic collaborations and performances, unmatched in their diversity, ambition and reach. His television series and book Ways of Seeing revolutionised the way that Fine Art is read and understood, while his engagement with European peasantry and migration in the fiction trilogy Into Their Labours and A Seventh Man stand as models of empathy and insight.
Central to Berger’s creative identity is the idea of collaboration, with people, places and communities as much as with other writers and thinkers. Democratic and open exchange is embedded into his project, and among those artists with whom he has worked are some of the most imaginative in their fields - theatre director Simon McBurney of Complicite, the late artist Juan Munoz, photographer Jean Mohr, composer Gavin Bryars and film-makers Mike Dibb, Alain Tanner and Timothy Neat.
Due to the range of his work in all media, the totality of John Berger’s achievement is often overlooked. His internationalist perspective, and refusal to be contained within narrow definitions of what might constitute the life of a writer, has meant that few perhaps have encountered the full body of work. Here Is Where We Meet intends to place this unique oeuvre in context, and through it to consider what it means to be a committed artist in a rapidly changing and challenging period of our history".

CALL FOR PAPERS

Doing Phenomenology: Back To The Things Themselves!

Deadline for submitting a proposal is January 5, 2011

BTTTT! 2011
DOING PHENOMENOLOGY:
BACK TO THE THINGS THEMSELVES!
HOME | WHAT WE WANT | WHAT WE DON'T WANT | THE WORKSHOP | THE DETAILS

As always, BTTTT! is explicitly interested in the application of phenomenology’s insights and the generation of detailed, rigorous, extended descriptions of the lived world, which can be expressed in terms of essences or manifold matrices of meaning.  As always, we are interested in textual exegesis only to the extent that it complements a given description.  As always, our aim is to stay close to the phenomenon itself in order to be faithful to it and describe it vividly to others.  Descriptions may arise from phenomenological reflection broadly construed, so long as the phenomenon remains the chief focus of the paper.

Papers for the 2011 panel should therefore bear these general commitments in mind, but also call attention to the phenomenological method the author has employed in generating his or her description.  This might be done in a variety of ways, but the goal should be to show the audience how a description was generated.  Explications of method should be stated in broad terms, and overly-detailed textual exegesis should be relegated to footnotes or appendices in order to preserve the "flow" of a description.  We are interested in how our panelists have learned from, applied, adjusted, merged, questioned, subverted or otherwise deployed a variety of phenomenological methods in the development of their own phenomenological practice.  Our intention is for these methodological reflections to contribute directly to our half-day workshop, in which we will focus explicitly on participants’ divergent experiences of “doing phenomenology.”  Studies that take up specific perspectives (e.g. ecophenomenology, feminist phenomenology, naturalized phenomenology) or that engage a specific area of phenomenological inquiry (e.g. phenomenology of architecture, media, technology, embodiment, art) are all most welcome, as long as the description remains the chief focus of the paper.  In sum, papers submitted to this panel must contain both:

1. A detailed, rigorous, extended and original description of a phenomenon in the lived world.

2. An explication of the method used to generate this description.

In the spirit of collaborative phenomenology, paper commentators for BTTTT! 2011 will view these descriptions in light of their rigor, originality, and the application of method.  In other words, commentators in this panel will act less as critics of scholarly exegesis and more as collaborators helping to extend, refine and deepen a paper’s description.  Criticisms of textual interpretation are welcome so long as they further the aim of collaborative inquiry into phenomenological method.

A publicação
